The legendary John Mandeville was an English knight who travelled the world in the 14th century. He and the travel account attributed to him embodied the thirst for knowledge about the world when the West began to become geopolitically important for the first time. He is said to have visited Turkey, Asia Minor, Persia, Syria, Arabia, Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia, Mesopotamia, Russia, India, and China, and all the places in between. He is believed to have been a great navigator, as well as a linguist and astronomer. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the world and his writing was fantastically popular. When the demand for global intelligence rocketed, Mandeville had the goods.
